Strategically, the most promising species were collected and sent to leading research centers in Latin America, such as EMBRAPA in Brazil and CIAT in Colombia.
Through genetic studies, breeding processes, and controlled crossbreeding, new cultivars were developed, which today account for more than 90% of tropical pasture varieties commercialized worldwide.
Successful examples include:
Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu
Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça
Other varieties that have revolutionized tropical livestock farming.
Thanks to its agroclimatic conditions similar to those of the African continent especially in terms of latitude Brazil has established itself as the world’s largest producer and exporter of tropical forage seeds.
This prominent position allows the country to multiply seeds with high vigor and purity, ensuring safe and sustainable supply for cattle ranchers and farmers throughout Latin America and beyond.
Interestingly, many of these seeds that originally came from Africa, after being genetically improved and adapted in Brazil and other Latin American countries, now return to the African continent with higher genetic value, superior productive performance, and better adaptability.
SGM Seeds is proud to work with materials developed by EMBRAPA, maintaining representatives and active operations in Africa. Our mission is to regularly export tropical seeds of the highest quality, contributing to the development of livestock farming and sustainable agriculture across the continent.
